When I tested Kodak's new stock, I was shooting a feature film with white and black skin tones, and a lot of scenes being shot at night. I wanted to overexpose the negative by one stop to improve the black skin tones and shadow detail, but didn't want to lose detail in the highlights of the white skin tones. The new (KODAK VISION2) Expression film demonstrated improved grain while maintaining low contrast and color saturation, with a lot of details in the shadows and highlights. That makes this film easy to work with in telecine because there is more image information in the highlight areas. For a 16 mm film, this stock is evolutionary in terms of granularity - the overexposure/granularity problem has been solved. In addition, the neutral tone scale and true color reproduction are noteworthy attributes. The tone scale kept its stability through all the stops of the gray scale - from black to white - keeping its neutrality and linearity. The 7229 kept the lightest light gray at the edge of the scale and the white was still separate. Typically, these two patches are difficult to distinguish. Also during the test, red tones and black and white skin tones were illuminated with fluorescent lights, and even under those conditions, the red tones lost very little of its saturation.
